Kampala, Uganda: MTN has registered over 100,000
customers on its mobile money transfer service, MTN Mobile Money in less
than its projected timeframe of 6 months. The company marked the
achievement by rewarding the 100,000th customer, Mr. Yasin Kasablank
Itembe with UGX.1million worth of mobile money.
“Reaching this mark within such a short period of time demonstrates the
strong impact that Mobile Money has had in the market,” says Isaac Nsereko,
the Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda. “The need for an easy to use
and convenient product on the market drove us at MTN to develop an
affordable solution that could be used by our customers in their lives as
they carry out daily transactions.” he adds. Without divulging details,
Nsereko says the company was looking into various ways of improving the
service and making it even more relevant to Ugandans.
“We do ask our customers for patience as we go about enhancing the product
to suit and match customer needs and demands. Already, they are enjoying
the benefits of the service among which include the ability to send and
receive money even without a handset and regardless of your network.” he
concluded.
Mr. Itembe, a radio presenter on NBS Radio in Jinja, could not hide his
happiness on receiving his prize of UGX. 1million on his phone. “I am so
happy and I can’t believe it.” he says. “When I was registering I just
wanted to send money to my relatives without the hassle of running up and
down. I did not expect to be rewarded this way. All I can say is thank you
to MTN,” he adds.
The money transfer service, launched only six months ago, has seen
transactions of over UGX.16 billion gone through the system to date and to
ensure easy access to the service, MTN has signed up 800 outlets/agents
countrywide with the numbers increasing daily.
